As I write this, Colorado is bombarded with snow, ice and cold. My friends in the Pacific Northwest complain of weather too dark and gloomy to motivate them to even go outside. People are lethargic and uninspired. The Winter Blues have struck.
In winter you may feel bored, irritable, restless, fatigued, and you might sleep more than normal. It’s not just because your relatives are visiting. You’ve got a case of the Blues.
The Winter Blues are a mild form of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Seasonal, because it is influenced by the seasons; affective, as it is an expression of mood; and disorder, referring to the change in the body’s normal way of functioning.
It may sound daunting but, fortunately, Winter Blues are seasonal. The signs show up in early winter, with lessening daylight, and can last until spring when the days grow longer. Symptoms then disappear leaving the sufferer in sound health until the following winter.
