Lemon essential oil is one that I got to know many years ago. At my hectic office job, my mind and spirit would wander in the afternoon. So, I loaded an aromatherapy diffuser with rosemary for alertness, lavender to de-stress, and lemon for energy. I worried that those around me would be offended, but instead I heard people approach my office commenting on the nice smell. I had a winning blend – it smelled nice and it perked up my afternoon slump. Lemon energized me and made me happy. It can do much more, such as disinfect and aid digestion.

As an oil used for its medicinal attributes and cleaning abilities, lemon (Citrus limon) shines as an antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, and refreshing essential oil. The clean-scented oil succeeds in aiding colds, sore throats and nausea while regulating the immune system and raising resistance to disease. It eases depression and tension and also improves concentration, memory and clear thinking. Lemon even increases lymph circulation making it effective at conquering cellulite.

Looking to lemon’s use in digestion, a study was done to see if it could relieve constipation in the elderly. One group received massage with a blend that included lemon, while another received massage without essential oils. The number of bowel movements in the aromatherapy group was higher than that of the control group with the effect lasting two weeks after treatment.

The essential oil of lemon is a great addition to homemade cleaning products. Useful in surface cleaners and wood polish, it will also disinfect wooden surfaces when they are washed with a sponge with a few drops of the oil applied to it. The scent may even make you less stressed about cleaning.

I share with you a recipe from the Facebook page for IFPA (International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists):
Week Ahead Blend
1 drop Spearmint (Mentha spicata) – fresh and cooling
1 drop Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – fragrant and calming
1 drop Lemon (Citrus limon) – to refresh our feeling
1 drop Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) – to help with grounding
