Aromatherapy in the Workplace

When I first became interested in Aromatherapy, I worked in an office with 50 employees. Unfortunately for me, the building layout was set up so that my office was down the hall from the bathroom. The ‘air clearing’ idea for the bathroom was to use a commercial spray cleaner. When someone was done doing their thing my hallway would smell like chemical spray and poo. Not good for me. So, I decided to get a little help from essential oils.

Upon learning that essential oils didn’t just cover up smells but could convert the odiferous molecules into something better, I composed a bathroom spray. That was 25 years ago, when Aromatherapy had yet to become a household word, so I wasn’t sure how well-received my product would be. I didn’t need to worry. I was ecstatic the first time someone came into my office holding an empty bottle announcing that it needed to be refilled. The spray was a hit!

That was just the start of my Office Aromatherapy. I was later in an office that was up a flight of stairs. By mid-afternoon I often needed a pick-me-up so I thought I would try a plug-in diffuser and a few essential oils. My hope was that my office was secluded so the scent wouldn’t reach others and I would receive no complaints. Fortunately that scent was also a hit. I would hear voices at the bottom of the stairs wondering what the nice smell was.

I offer the recipes from my forays into Aromatherapy in the Workplace with one caveat – unless you work for yourself, you should ask your manager for permission before using.

Bathroom Freshener – it not only has a pleasant scent but it kills germs, too
20 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil
15 drops Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil
15 drops Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil
4 oz distilled water
Add essential oils then water to a 4 oz sprayer bottle. Shake gently to mix. Spray into the air, avoiding eyes. Shake before each use.

Afternoon Alert diffuser blend
3 drops Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) essential oil
5 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil
3 drops Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil
4 drops Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) essential oil
Place the essential oils in a dropper bottle. Roll gently to mix. Use a couple drops in your diffuser, following manufacturer’s instructions.

Now go out and scent your work world!
