This week begins the holiday season. Halloween kicks things off with costumed kids going door to door looking for treats. Hopefully they won’t get tricked instead and pick up a cold. Close contact with others who are sick is how germs are spread, but aromatherapy can bust germs so you don’t get sick.

According to the Center for Disease Control, washing your hands often with soap and water can help prevent the spread of germs. Also recommended is “cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu (to) help slow the spread of influenza.” By adding germ-killing essential oils, you can make your chances of getting ill even lower.

There are several ways to include aromatherapy in your daily life that can help prevent the spread of germs. Diffusing essential oils that are antibacterial and antiviral can rid your environment of the microbes that cause colds. Another method is to use aromatherapy sprays on surfaces to keep them germ-free.

It’s also a good idea to carry a hand sanitizing gel so that you can keep your hands clean when washing with soap and water is inconvenient. If you make your own natural version it shouldn’t weaken your immune system in the way that commercial sanitizers can. Fortunately they are easy to make by following the recipe below:

Hand Sanitizing Hand Gel
5 drops Vitamin E oil
1 oz Aloe Vera gel
10 drops Cajuput (Melaleuca cajuputi) essential oil
10 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil
10 drops Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) essential oil
Place Vitamin E oil and essential oils in a squeeze bottle. Shake gently. Add Aloe Vera gel and shake gently again. Use on hands several times per day after coming in contact with frequently touched surfaces or after shaking hands.

If you are concerned about natural medicines, know that they have been in use for hundreds of years and have fewer side effects when used correctly. Also, it’s interesting to note that antibiotics don’t work on viruses but essential oils do, so aromatherapy can kill a wide variety of germs that you encounter.

To get you started on a healthier day, here is a formula to combat germs. Spray it in the air, on counters, or inside the toilet bowl. For simpler cold and flu busting, try our Immune Tune-Up Spray.

Germ Fighter Spray
5 drops Fir (Abies alba) essential oil
10 drops Lemon (Citrus limonum) essential oil
5 drops Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) essential oil
5 drops Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil
10 drops Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oil
2 oz Distilled Water
Combine essential oils in a sprayer bottle. Add distilled water. Shake well before use and avoid spraying in eyes or on pets.

To stay healthy this season remember that aromatherapy can stop germs in their tracks before they stop you.
