When choosing a mint essential oil I generally pick peppermint because I prefer the scent. But it can be overly stimulating, a fact I have confirmed when I stopped a night’s blending with peppermint at 10:00 pm and couldn’t fall sleep until 3:00 am! A more soothing mint oil is spearmint (Mentha spicata) with it’s sweeter, less penetrating scent.
You don’t often hear about spearmint essential oil – it’s kind of like peppermint’s poor cousin. However, it has similar therapeutic actions to peppermint with a more subtle aroma. It is sweet and more fruity smelling so kids like it, but it is useful for all ages.
Some conditions that can benefit from a bit of spearmint essential oil added to a blend are headache, exhaustion, stress, and nervousness as it helps the mind to relax. It is used for digestive complaints such as flatulence and nausea, and in cases of asthma and vertigo. It can even help cool a fever by reducing body temperature when used in a bath, but it can be a mucous membrane irritant so remember to dilute properly.
Spearmint is bright and invigorating so it works well in the blend below to give you a boost of inspiration and energy.
